History of True Vine COGIC Ministries

True Vine Church of God in Christ of Kankakee was founded in 1973 by the Late Pastor, Administrative Assistant Abram Lane, and his devoted wife, Missionary Mattie (Mother)  Lane.  Pastor Lane was supported by the Bishop, James Curtis Austin Sr., who played a significant role in establishing the ministry’s early foundation. Pastor Lane served faithfully until God called him home in 2023.

The True Vine COGIC ministry began humbly with only six members, gathering for worship in the basement of Pastor and Missionary Lane’s home at 449 N. Cottage Ave., Kankakee, Illinois. The founding members included:

  • Pastor Abram Lane
  • Missionary Mattie Lane
  • Elder John Lane
  • Missionary Willie Lane
  • Sister Ora Harper
  • Sister Emma Stewart

Although small in numbers, they were rich in faith, dedication, and had a burning desire

to do the work of the Lord.

A Growing Church, Favored by God

As God added to the church, True Vine COGIC was blessed in 1975 to purchase their first

sanctuary located at 170 S. Wildwood St., Kankakee, IL.  With the support of committed members and the tireless efforts of Pastor Lane, the church became a thriving worship center for praise, worship, prayer, and community fellowship.

In 1986, God continued to expand the ministry, and True Vine COGIC moved to a larger facility at 240 S. Chicago Ave., Kankakee, IL.  For 25 years, this served as the primary location where countless souls were introduced to Jesus, souls were saved, families were strengthened, and lives were transformed through the power of God.

Trials, Storms, and Rebuilding by Faith

True Vine COGIC endured multiple storms over the years that caused significant damage to the church buildings.  Yet each time, Pastor Lane and the faithful members stood firm in prayer, perseverance, and faith.

On September 17, 2013, after much prayer, Pastor Lane and the members agreed to purchase  a new Church property at 600 S. Harrison Ave., Kankakee, IL, which became the new home of True Vine COGIC.  However, on July 28, 2022, another severe storm struck the building, causing extensive damage; And by God’s grace, no one was inside the church at the time of the storm… “Praise God!!!”

Under the Spiritual Leadership of Overseer, Missionary Mattie Lane, the rebuilding process began immediately.  The Lord called Minister James Lane, to facilitate and coordinate the physical reconstruction and renovation of our church.  Minister Lane invested countless hours — often traveling more than 200 miles daily — to ensure the house of God would be restored.  With a dedicated construction team and committed church members, the rebuilding continued faithfully, even after Pastor Lane’s transition to Glory in 2023.

By December 2024, the church restoration was completed, standing as a testament to God’s faithfulness and the unwavering commitment too the Lane family and the entire congregation.

A New Chapter: Continuing the Vision

To carry forward the powerful legacy and vision established by Pastor Abram Lane and Overseer Mattie Lane, Bishop James Austin Sr., and the True Vine COGIC Board Members prayerfully appointed Pastor Earl L. Hicks to Lead the congregation.  During the December 29, 2024, official rededication service for the church building, Pastor Hicks was affirmed as the interim Pastor of True Vine Church of God in Christ.

With his lovely wife, First Lady, Missionary, Dr. Barbara Hicks, serving faithfully beside him, Pastor Hicks continues to lead the church into its next chapter of spiritual

growth, community impact, and Kingdom driven purpose.

In November 2025, True Vine Church of God  in Christ was officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) Religious Organization, solidifying its status as a nonprofit ministry committed to serving God and the community.

True Vine COGIC remains a church standing on faith, rooted in love, and committed to doing the will of God — just as it has since 1973.
